    Frequently Asked Questions.

How do I clean clean and maintain my gas fireplace?
Most manufacturers recommend an annual maintenance check by certified professional.

White film on glass: This is a natural by-product of minerals from natural gas. Cleaning should be done two to three times per year. We have a special gas glass cleaner that will take off the film with very little effort. Look at manufacturer's instructions to take off the glass front.

Soot on glass or logs: Usually this means that the fuel-to-air ratio needs to be adjusted. There is likely incorrect log placement. If the logs have been moved, it may cause this problem.

I do not have an outside wall, can I still use a direct vent?
Yes. You can vent vertically through the roof or horizontally through an exterior wall. Classic Fireplace will be happy to help with determining the best venting option for your layout.

Will my gas hearth product still burn if I lose electricity?
Yes. The standing pilots have their own millivolt generator, so the fireplace or stove will work. The fan, which is 110 volt, will not, but you can space heat the area the appliance is located in.

Are gas hearth products expensive to operate?
Based on national averages, with a 30,000 BTU gas fireplace your cost will be approximately 12 - 20 cents/hour. Propane is slightly higher.

Is a wood burning fireplace as efficient as gas?
Some are primarily decorative, what we call snap, crackle, pop. They can pull lots of warm air out of the room and drop in lots of cold air. Still, there are several clean burning units that are very efficient. See our Products page for more information on what's available.

Why are non-vented stoves and fireplaces not certified in Canada?
Non - vented gas appliances are equipped with Oxygen Depletion Sensors. These devices have proven reliable and automatically close down the appliance if Carbon Monoxide reaches a dangerous level. However, when gas burns it releases a significant amount of water vapour (gas can be 25% moisture). In a climate such as ours, this moisture inside the house can be detrimental over time. In addition, many non-vented stoves release identifiable odours that are undesirable to some homeowners.

Why does my new gas fireplace/stove have an odour?
All new products have a curing process. We recommend that you read your manufacturer's instructions. If possible, have a steady burn for 6 - 8 hours. This will help with the curing of the paint, oils etc. Often people will put on their new appliance for 15 - 30 minutes and never get a proper cure. In the Fall, wash the top of the fireplace down, pull down or lift up the top louver. Dust accumulates over the summer and this will give you a slight odour on start up.

Can I still install a woodstove or fireplace?
Yes. Any certified wood burning stove or fireplace is allowed to be installed in accordance with manufacturer's requirements. Permits should be taken care of and the installation should be inspected. The company you use should be WETT Certified. Classic Fireplace is certified.

It is -25c outside, why did my fireplace shut down?
When the temperature drops very low it is normal for vents to freeze up. The pilot gives just enough heat for condensation to form, so when the mercury drops, and the wind-chill factor becomes more extreme, vents may freeze up. When you light the fireplace, the flame will lift and shut down the appliance. This is a safety switch, as the cold icy air is very heavy and will not let the warm air rise.

Basements and vertical vents that hold more cold air are more susceptible to the safety switch being tripped. When the weather warms or the sun melts the ice from the vent the system will function normally.
