Solar Powered Air Conditioning For All
We all pay some company, somewhere, to give us electricity every day. It's a monthly expense just like food and gas, and at least half of that energy expense is used just to keep us cool or warm. But it doesn't have to be that way.
Electricity can be free... thanks to solar power.
Free, as in zero cost. Something for nothing. We have a natural power company shining down on us every day that doesn't cost a single cent. No service fee, no taxes, no deposits, no debits. The problem has simply been how to affordably harness that free solar power to eliminate what it costs to keep us cool or warm... which is half of that monthly electricity cost.
Today, there is finally a way. And thanks in part to lucrative utility rebates and government credits, it's actually a very affordable way.
Every year I get more excited about the newer, greener heating and cooling products being developed. In 2008, the first solar-assisted heat pump was released by Lennox®, which was a landmark in itself. It featured a single solar panel that partly powered the unit’s fan motor. Now a new residential heating and air conditioning solar product has just been released, the Lennox SunSource® Home Energy System. More than your average HVAC system, they call it a home energy system because, well… that’s exactly what it is. The new SunSource system actually powers the entire HVAC system AND can also help to power your home. It’s the world’s only solar powered home energy system, and it’s a game-changer.

The system fully integrates solar power, harnessing the sun's free and renewable energy to reduce the electricity used by the heat pump or air conditioning system, and to operate other devices in the home that consume electricity – such as lighting and appliances – when the system is not running. If the system generates more power than the home uses, the excess power is sent back to the utility company for a possible credit on the homeowner’s utility bill. It’s also expandable. Homeowners can start small with just one solar panel and expand the system over time to as many as 15 panels per outdoor HVAC unit.
How SunSource works to reduce your utility costs:
- The solar modules harness the sun’s energy to power the SunSource® Solar-Ready heat pump or air conditioner.
- When the heat pump or air conditioner isn’t running, the solar power can also operate other electrical devices in your home.
- With net-metering, any surplus power goes back to the grid possibly entitling homeowner to a credit.
- A communication module allows you to see the system status, energy production, and also shows the environmental benefits of using renewable energy for your home.
As an example of energy savings, a consumer who lives in a 1,800 sq. ft. home in Corpus Christi, Texas, can reduce cooling electricity usage by approximately 91% annually by installing a high-efficiency air conditioner with 15 solar modules. In addition to the cost savings and incentives offered by many local utilities for using high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment and/or renewable energy sources, the new system can make homeowners eligible for Federal and state solar tax credits. In some areas, when combined, these incentives could total thousands of dollars in savings, and cover a significant part of the cost of the solar modules, including installation.
