My radiant heating system took early retirement at age 55 so I needed to find a replacement heating system. I live in an Eichler home - with a flat roof - and I didn't want to have an ugly forced air system placed on top of my home. We looked at several alternatives, including baseboard systems that would use my existing boiler, but this approach is nearly as invasive as adding airducts to a flat roof. A friend of ours asked if we had looked into a "mini-split system" and I had to admit I had never heard of it. I looked on Mitsubishi's website and found a great overview of how these Japanese-designed systems work. They don't run heated or cooled air through long heat runs, but instead pipe a copper refrigerent line into individual rooms and into an "air handler". The advantage is that each room can be temperature-controlled and that we have a roof line that resembles the original look of Eichlers and not that of the USS Enterprise. I asked Mitsubishi to have three local contractors contact us, but interestingly, none did! I went back to their website, found three other local contractors and then met with them. I received a very competitive bid from Dominic Freschi and had the system installed last week. We were pleased with the overall purchase, installation and experience in working with Freschi. Dominic and the installation crew could not have been more pleasant to work with and were polite, on time and professional. I encourage other homeowners to check out mini-split systems and Freschi. My kids are all raised, and the capability to control the heating or cooling of individual rooms makes tremendous sense now. These systems seem ideal for Eichler owners who are looking at end-of-life hydronic heating systems, and don't wish to switch to forced air systems. Negatives: Appearance: A mini-split system places an air handler into each room. These are about 31" wide and protrude about 14" from the wall. Initially, they're not attractive. But they are whisper quiet and after a couple of days, you forget that they are on the wall. My system required some internal components being placed in a closet and my garage... they're ugly as sin, but in places where we don't have to see them everyday. Cost: The system is not cheap. I believe the equipment is more expensive than a traditional forced air system. But installation is not horrible, and in my flat roof house, it meant fewer roof penetrations and less clutter on my roof. Roof penetration: in our installation, we still had several places where our foam roof had to be pierced for electrical and refrigerent line insertion. Anytime you penetrate your flat roof, you have the potential for a leak. We'll have to have our roofing company come out and pay for some additional protection against future problems. Talk to your roofer before you sign off on the heating and air conditioning system. Positives: Operation: for the first time in 30 years, we have air conditioning in our home. We didn't truly need it, but it's part of the system. And we love it. The operation of the system is simple, and the system is very quiet. Economy: maybe too early to say, but since we can control the temperature of individual rooms, my guess is that this system will make it far less expensive to heat my home in the winter than my old radiant heating system. Service: I need to clean the filters every six months or so. No annual maintenance deal, no fuss. Take the filters out, hose them off, dry them and replace them. Simple. Purchase experience: Dominic Freschi made us very comfortable in our purhcase decision. He walked us through the process, explained what would happen and delivered on his promises. He got a great crew to the job site and checked in frequently to ensure our happiness. A total professional, just like everyone else at Freschi we came into contact with.

I just wanted to advise you of the excellent service provided by one of your technicians. He not only serviced our problem but assisted my diabetic husband during a low blood sugar attack by contacting an ambulance and calling me to inform me of the problem. He called the ambulance and also put our dog out on our porch to get her out of the way of the ambulance crew AND gave her water also. This is service excellence above & beyond and I want to make sure this tech is recognized for his professional, courteous and helpful conduct.
