What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in North America always writes about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds reassuring, what does it truly mean?

NATE is an abbreviation for North American Technician Excellence and, as mentioned on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization was developed by and has been supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not all people in the industry are required to be NATE-certified. The certification is discretionary and technicians can service heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment without being NATE-certified.

It’s important to Service Experts that our technicians are NATE-certified to be sure we are sending the most qualified and skilled technicians into your home. To make sure professionals meet these benchmarks, the NATE-certification tests validate real-world working knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems for technicians. The exams are knowledge-based tests that assess the technician’s knowledge of these standards.

Since Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification instead of refrigeration, there are only particular areas pertinent to our technicians. NATE assessment candidates may obtain installation and/or service certification in one or more of the talent areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
