How a Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioning System Works

A ductless mini-split pairs an outdoor condenser unit with one or more indoor air handlers. The two components connect through a small bundle of insulated refrigerant lines run through a hole in the wall, typically about three inches wide. No ductwork is required.

Each indoor air handler operates independently, so different rooms or zones can be cooled to different temperatures at the same time. In a multi-zone system, a single outdoor condenser can serve several handlers spread across the home. Because conditioned air moves directly from the unit into the room rather than traveling through ducts, there’s no cooling loss from leaky or poorly sealed ductwork.
