How a Geothermal System Heats & Cools Your Home

A geothermal system works through heat transfer, not combustion. Underground pipes, called the ground loop, circulate water or an antifreeze solution between the earth and a heat pump unit inside your home. In summer, the system pulls heat out of your home and moves it into the cooler ground. In winter, it extracts warmth stored below ground and brings it into your living space.

The three main components are the ground loop, the heat pump unit (which houses the compressor and controls), and the air delivery system that distributes conditioned air through your existing ductwork. Because the ground temperature stays relatively stable year-round, the system doesn’t have to work as hard during extreme outdoor temperatures as a conventional air-source unit does.

Horizontal, Vertical & Pond Loop Configurations

All three loop types follow the same heat transfer principle. The configuration that’s right for your property depends on lot size, soil type, and proximity to water, not on performance differences between types.

Horizontal loop: Pipes are buried in trenches a few feet below the surface. This option works well for homes with enough open land for horizontal runs.
