When Should You Repair Your Air Conditioner and When Should You Replace It

Your AC is chugging away through another the U.S. summer and suddenly the cold air stops coming out. You call an A/C system professional to come to your home and evaluate the problem and before it's over you’re going to have to pay a chuck of change for the repair. So when do you give up and just replace your current A/C equipment?

Age

Obviously as your system ages it’s likely to fail and lose efficiency. A/C systems over eight years old are actually much less efficient than the new energy-efficient equipment available today. But if your equipment is more than 13 years old, you are probably going to lose more money over time to keep it running than if you just bought a new, energy-efficient A/C system.

Money

To continue with the statement above, eventually it’s going to begin costing more to invest in new parts and repair issues than it would to just invest in a new air conditioning system. Another factor to remember is R-22, the usual refrigerant for old A/C equipment, is being withdrawn from the market for the safety of the environment. If your air conditioning system was manufactured before 2010, you will soon see a jump in the price of your refrigerant until you replace your equipment.

Efficiency

Engineering is always developing and with that comes more energy-efficient A/C systems. New systems tend to cost less to operate because they are capable of cooling the home more efficiently, decreasing your utility bills Ð and who doesn’t enjoy that?
