What to Expect During an AC Repair Appointment

So, all of a sudden your A/C needs repair at your the U.S. home and you don't know what that entails. It’s stressful enough to welcome an A/C system repair technician into your home, but then to wonder what they’re going to do can add even more unnecessary stress. But fear not! Service Experts is here to update you on the basic A/C system repair process so you can be informed when an expert air conditioning service technician needs to pay you a visit.

AC Repair Starts Simple

When the repairman arrives, the first thing they should do is ask to see the thermostat. It might sound silly, but they need to inspect it to verify that it’s not merely a thermostat settings issue. The repairman will confirm the thermostat is flipped to cool and then lower the temperature to see if that will start up the air conditioner. A flawed or improperly connected wire could be the culprit that’s keeping you from a comfortable home.

If this doesn't resolve the trouble, the technician may need to look at your circuit breaker box. They will probably switch the circuit switches to off and then back to on to see if that activates the AC.

Getting to the Nitty-Gritty of AC Repair

The repairman will then probably ask you to see the A/C. Similar to a doctor, the repairman will begin their trial and error discovery process. There are several variables that could be the cause for an A/C system that isn’t running properly, and it’s up the repairman to look into all the possible sources starting from the most common issues to the least. This process could take anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes or more.

During the air conditioning diagnosis, they will likely check the air filter to verify it’s not clogged or requires replacing. They will check the air conditioner's refrigerant levels, verify the air condenser fan is circulating properly, verify that the size of your A/C system is correct for the size of your house, and examine the safety controls, wiring, and electronics.

Once the air conditioning repairman has determined the trouble, he or she should explain all your options to you. The discussion will typically start with the repairman explaining what the trouble is, what part (if any) died, how or why it died, and AC operates.

The repairman will then go into your courses of action, which will include swapping out the part and correcting the problem, but could also include upgrading parts of the A/C, the air conditioner itself, or your complete heating and cooling system. In particular cases, it may make more sense to buy a whole new heating and cooling system, especially if the air conditioner is past its prime, or prone to breaking down again and end up costing you more for air conditioning repairs in the end. The repairman will go over how much time, effort, and cost it will take to rectify the problem.

The repairman might at this point explain what could have been done to avoid the trouble or part failure and how to prevent a future issue. This typically includes yearly maintenance, which not only helps avoid an air conditioning breakdown, but in most experiences also keeps your air conditioner's warranty valid. Most expert AC repair centers will offer an annual service plan so you don’t have to worry about making future AC tune-up appointments for your home.

Lastly, they will go over the process for repairing the failed part or resolving the trouble. If you elect that AC repair is better for you than buying an upgraded A/C system, the repairman will order any parts necessary and schedule your new appointment to fix your air conditioner. Or, if the part needed is already accessible on their vehicle, they will go ahead and start the air conditioner repair work with your authorization.
