You hear your HVAC system start up and you’re anticipating a cozy blast of warm air, but instead all you feel is cool air blowing. That’s no good in the freezing weather!
There are a handful of reasons why your heating system could be blowing cold air. Service Experts is here with a couple of them to help you find the culprit.
- Thermostat
It may sound silly, but the thermostat is where you should start. It’s the starting point for any heating technician, too. Verify the system is set to “auto as opposed to “on.” If the thermostat is set to “on” then your heating system will blow continually, even when it isn't really heating the air being produced, thus blowing cold air. Flipping it to “auto” will make sure the heating system only blows when it’s really heating the air to keep your home warm and cozy.
- Air Filter
The majority of air filters need to be changed monthly to avoid them from becoming dirty and clogged. If air filters aren’t changed often enough, the clogged air filter may obstruct airflow into your furnace. If this happens, it can overheat your system, causing the furnace to stop heating as a safety measure.
- Duct Work
If your duct work includes leaks, connection troubles, or was not designed correctly, it could let warm air from the heating system to leak out. This would not only cause your heating system to give off cold air, it could significantly run up your heating bills since your furnace is heating non-living space, and will have to work harder to keep your home warm.
