What Are Trip Charges & Diagnostic Fees

When you need heating, cooling or plumbing services from Service Experts, you will pay for the trip charge and a diagnostic fee separately. Many companies you’ve called in the past may have combined the trip charge and diagnostic fee, but we think we can offer even more value by separating the two.

What Exactly Is a Trip Charge?

A trip charge includes the cost for a qualified plumber or HVAC technician to stop by your home. Often called a service call fee, this cost is the base rate for delivering our technicians, equipment and expertise to your door.

What Is a Diagnostic Fee?

The diagnostic fee pays for the services required to find the source of a problem. With plumbing, this may include scoping. For HVAC repairs, it could involve inspecting the inside of your unit. If you decide to use Service Experts for the repairs, the diagnostic fee would be rolled into the repair bill. However, you will be charged for the diagnostic services alone if you choose not to.

What Is the Difference Between a Trip Fee and a Diagnostic Fee

In general, a trip fee covers sending the plumber or HVAC technician to your property, while the diagnostic fee covers all the work concerned with evaluating the issue and working up a plan for repairs. If you're paying for repairs, you won't even notice the diagnostic fee as it will be absorbed into the cost of the repairs.

Why Are Diagnostic Fees and Trip Charges Separated?

Many plumbers and HVAC companies charge a single fee for both the trip and the diagnostics. Rather than charging you for two services at the same time, we have two individual fees. This enables us to price our services in the fairest available manner.
